Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh "used" to show that creating art worthy of a museum is difficult

15 March 2024

A few very clever films produced by the Association of Independent Commercial Producers show Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo being subjected to the doubtful opinions of clients' spouses and put through the paces of contemporary focus groups.

All of this is done to draw exceptional entries for its yearly awards. The winning ads are preserved in the Department of Film archives of the Museum of Modern Art for study by future generations, so posterity is at stake here.

Prospective applicants are reminded by the films that "Creating art worthy of a museum is difficult." Making ads worthy of a museum is more difficult. Brian Billow of O Positive oversaw them, and Chris Beresford-Hill, chief creative officer of the Americas at BBDO, provided creative concepts and advice.
