"Frida" the opera by Robert Xavier Rodriguez in Orlando, FL on January 26 and 28, 2024

10 January 2024

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Argentinean Maestro Jorge Parodi, conducts a masterful rendition of Robert Xavier Rodríguez's chamber orchestra score, which combines mariachi-style orchestrations, classical opera, and touches of Mexican folk songs for an authentic and captivating musical portrayal of Frida

"Frida" premiered in 1991 and is a biography of Frida Kahlo that presents her as an incredibly unique and magnetic woman. Kahlo's experiences—her early years during the Mexican Revolution, the terrible accident that left her crippled and sterile, her marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and their sporadic love affairs, her affiliation with the Communist Party, and her immersion in Mexican folklore and culture—are illuminated by the opera's spectacular display of art and music.

“Frida is operatic in its storytelling, and truly theatrical in its scope and scale. Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s music is romantically dramatic with mariachi-style orchestration and a unique mix of musical theater styles combined with Mexican folk songs and dances. “Frida Kahlo is still such a part of our pop culture, and to see her life on stage at Steinmetz Hall for the Orlando premiere of the work will be something special. Plus, we are very excited to have Metropolitan Opera soprano Cecilia Violetta López returning to Orlando to make her role debut as Frida.” shares Opera Orlando artistic director Grant Preisser.
