Frida Kahlo "Self-portrait with Monkey" at the National Gallery Singapore

04 December 2023

The art exhibition "Tropical: Stories From Southeast Asia And Latin America," hosted by the National Gallery Singapore, explores the connections between the two regions through more than 200 pieces of artwork, including sculptures, drawings, performances, and immersive installations by more than 70 artists.

Immediately upon entry, guests will encounter the self-portraits created by two artists: Malaysian artist Patrick Ng Kah Onn and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo ("Self-portrait with Monkey", 1945).  These self-portraits are displayed side by side on a framework that resembles a grid. The layout pays homage to Lina Bo Bardi, a Brazilian architect who created a grid system for a painting exhibition in 1970 using wood that was sourced locally. This structure makes it possible to view several pieces of art from different angles.
