Opera Orlando presents MEXICO CANTA! on September 9, 2023 at the Orlando Museum of Art, FL (US)

05 August 2023

México Canta! is an evening of entertainment honoring Mexican tradition, dress, and music as well as the work of surrealist artist Frida Kahlo, is being presented by Opera Orlando in collaboration with Casa De Mexico.

The MainStage performance of "Frida" by Opera Orlando will take place at Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on January 26 and 28, 2024 in Orlando, and México Canta! is the first of several lead-up performances.

“This fundraiser showcases some of the most quintessential artistic and musical styles of Mexico as a lead-up to our production of Frida in January,” says Opera Orlando general director Gabriel Preisser. "We hope this event will whet our guests’ appetites for all things Frida, and that everyone will join us at Steinmetz Hall later in the season for Robert Xavier Rodríquez’s fantastic opera about her life.”

A preview of Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López's performance as the title character in Frida, which she will sing when she returns to Orlando in January, will be presented by Mexico Lindo Folkloric Ballet Orlando.

Ms. Lopez is a favorite of Opera Orlando, having appeared in the company's past seasons as Mimi in La Bohème (2018) and Violetta in La Traviata (2021). She will perform pieces by Frida while being accompanied by a local pianist, Julie Tompkins, and after her performance, attendees will have the chance to socialize with Ms. Lopez and all of the performers from the evening's event.
