In addition to well-known pieces like Dance in Tehuantepec (1928), The Flowered Canoe (1931), Nude with Calla Lilies (1944), and other representations of flower sellers and carriers, the exhibition also includes three significant works by Frida Kahlo, all done in San Francisco, including a self-portrait of the artist next to Rivera.
Rarely seen pieces from private collections, significant paintings on loan from American and Mexican museums, studies for significant mural projects in Mexico City, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York, as well as sizable digital projections that capture the immersive nature of his monumental murals, are all included in the exhibition.
Diego Rivera’s America is co-organized by Crystal Bridges and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is curated by James Oles, guest curator, with Maria Castro, assistant curator at SFMOMA, and coordinated at Crystal Bridges by Jen Padgett, the museum’s acting Windgate curator of craft.
