In her exhibit "Groundbreaking Women," Orange County artist Allison Adams celebrates women in a variety of fields, decades, and interests.
After her spouse passed away in 2017, Adams started the initiative because she found inspiration and strength in the lives of these powerful women. Adams' vibrant depictions of these trailblazers are based on vintage black-and-white photos.
As Adams puts it, "As we learn their stories and look into their eyes, we remember our heritage as women and girls: creative, resilient, and courageous."
Famous people like NASA research mathematician Katherine Johnson and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, as well as activists Dolores Huerta, Angela Davis, Greta Thunberg, and artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo are included in the exhibition.
Muck Curator Lisa M. Berman comments on the selection, “So many of these ceiling breakers, inventors, activists, artists, musicians, and change-makers significant contributions have made history and changed our culture forever. Telling their stories through art honors them and inspires others to do the same with their own authentic voice.”
