"Frida Kahlo, à Revolução!" a theater play travelling since 2009 in Brasil

07 January 2022

The show will be at the Theatro São Pedro in Porto Alegre from the 9th to the 11th of January 2022.

"Frida Kahlo, à Revolução!", writtend and interpreted by Juçara Gaspar, is freely inspired by the life and works of the powerful Mexican painter. With an unpublished text and original live soundtrack, the artist and her paintings lead us through an ethical and aesthetic rediscovery, focused on the revolutionary principle of art as a solitary complaint. The dramaturgy focuses on the human aspects of the character in order to build a spectacle that brings out what can transcend the condition of myth.

The show turned 10 years old in 2019 and the life and work of Frida Kahlo increasingly encourage and underline themes that need to be encouraged, such as female protagonism, accessibility and inclusion, artistic freedom and denunciation of a sexist and patriarchal society.
Born as a 20 minute piece, after a few years it became an hour-long monologue, with a live soundtrack in voice and guitar by Luciano Alves.

"The monologue format reiterates the fridesque need to be the main character in her own story, to understand and portray herself. What can be interpreted – and was interpreted by several researchers of the psychic Frida profile – as narcissism and obsession with the image itself, is also a poetic and political position. For the first time in the history of art, a woman painter gained recognition still alive by painting herself in her everyday experiences. The woman's fight is everyday, and Frida was the first to paint her without euphemisms for the pain and blood that constitute her."

For Juçara Gaspar, the show continues to win new fans because it is renewed every season. “Seeing this montage, generated with so much appreciation and growing up in adolescence and without a date to stop, is a constant and full joy! The professionals who started the play follow together and are strong. This is another gift. In addition, it has the Frida Kahlo theme, which is inspiring and never ends”, she says.
“My comrades, this is the revolution”
The script began to be written in 2007, to fulfill the exercise of an extension course at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), but it was only completed in 2009. To do so, it had the partnership of Luciano Alves, responsible for the track sound of the work, and Lara Coletti, the production's set designer.

Frida's story, told by Juçara, gained space on international soil and was taken to Mexico in 2015, made possible by a notice from the Ministry of Culture. “There were thirty days of immersion and deepening of research on Mexican soil, covering Frida's footsteps, in addition to three presentations. We passed by the Instituto Brasileiro de Cultura, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana and the Museo Nacional de Arte. There were so many crossings that they reverberated in the costume, the soundtrack and the drama of the play”, says the actress.
