"Frida Kahlo, Her Photos" at the Springfield Museums, MA, US

01 June 2024 | 08 September 2024

"Frida Kahlo, Her Photos" is a collection of images from a secret archive hidden at Frida's residence, La Casa Azul (now Museo Frida Kahlo.)

Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, a photo historian and photographer from Mexico, is the exhibition's curator. It includes over 200 images that highlight Frida Kahlo's life, artistic vision, and close ties to Mexico.

The  selected photographs are organized into six main subjects: the origins, the Blue House, politics, revolution, Diego Rivera, Frida's broken body, and Frida's loves and friendships. These historical documents also represent the art and specific perspectives of other artists whose photographs are also part of the collection, such as Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, Edward Weston, Brassaï, Tina Modotti, or Gisèle Freund whose work has recently been exhibited in Prague.

"The art museums and the life of Frida Kahlo continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world," says Vice President and Director Heather Haskell-Burns. "We are excited to present this collection of never-before-seen photos, which gives our guests a closer look at Kahlo's life and artistic development through her photographs."
