Curated by Zofia Urban, the exibition includes Kahlo's paintings, photographs, a 1941 movie and an outdoor installation referring to the famous La Casa Azul.
'My dress hangs there' (1933), 'Coconuts' (1951), and 'Still life with watermelons' (1953) are three of Frida Kahlo's paintings that are on exhibit at the Officer Cadets School. The 1941 documentary and old photographs from the artist's life are added highlights to the show. Nickolas Muray, an American photographer who was close to Frida Kahlo and took many of her pictures, is the creator of the documentary. The artist and her husband, Diego Rivera, can be seen in the Blue House's garden in archive footage. The film's quality has been superbly kept over the years, especially the color intensity.
An outdoor piece that recreates a portion of Frida Kahlo's Blue House, where the artist was born, raised, created, and ultimately passed away, is also available for visitors to enjoy as part of the exhibition in the courtyard of the Officer Cadets School. This is the renowned La Casa Azul in Mexico's Coyoacán neighborhood, which is now a museum dedicated to the illustrious artist. From the very first steps, cobalt, red, and green make us feel as though we have entered the special, colorful, and natural world of Frida Kahlo.
A statue of a Mexican deity is leaning up against one of the installation's walls. The alcove was created from old photos of La Casa Azul's patio. The piece alludes to one of the native sculptures that Frida Kahlo and her husband adorned the Blue House garden with. A Polish sculptor named Micha Selerowski created a replica of the Mexican statue.
Work on the concept of an exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo's work was initiated by the late Professor Zbigniew Wawel, director of the Royal Lazienki Museum from 2017 to 2022. The exhibition was organized to mark the 95th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Mexico this year and the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Frida Kahlo Museum, known as La Casa Azul. Furthermore, the opening of the exhibition coincides with the legendary painter's 116th birthday.
This exhibition was produced in collaboration with the Royal Lazienki Museum, the Embassy of Mexico, the Acerbo Inbal Museum, a Mexican cultural institution dedicated to promoting Mexican culture worldwide, and the Museum of Modern Art, Mexico.
