"Io ti cielo - Frida Kahlo" by Aurelia Cipollini at 'Sinfonie Rurali’ in Corigliano d’Otranto, Italy

30 July 2026

Art&Lab Lu Mbroia offers a programme featuring original music, theatre, poetry, folk traditions and artistic research, which will entertain visitors in the cultural centre throughout the summer.

On Thursday 6 August at 9.30 pm, “Io ti cielo – Frida Kahlo” takes to the stage, a play written and performed by Aurelia Cipollini. Set against the backdrop of revolutionary Mexico, the play traces the tormented, passionate and unyielding life of the Mexican artist.

The music is provided by Massimo Donno on vocals and guitar, and Francesco Pellizzari on percussion, whilst the voice-over of Diego Rivera is performed by Tomás Acosta.

Absolute and Visceral Love:the play revolves around the concept of all-consuming love. It explores Frida’s love for her homeland, her love of painting as a biological necessity, and her romantic yet destructive obsession with her husband, Diego Rivera.

‘Io ti cielo’ (Yo te cielo) is one of the most famous and intense expressions of love to have come from the pen of Frida. It is not simply a poem, but an intimate excerpt from her personal diary dated 22 January 1947, addressed to Diego. To describe a feeling that transcended the boundaries of standard language, she decided to invent a new verb: she transformed the noun ‘cielo’ into a pure action.

The forms used to tell the story range from theatre to music. The text consists of stories and letters from her diary, whilst Diego Rivera’s voice lends different nuances to the well-known figure of the painter.
And then there is the music. Traditional Mexican pieces, carefully chosen to enrich and enhance the narrative, are skilfully performed live by the two musicians.
