17-07-2026 In San Francisco, a historic building nestled in the hills, retaining its original design and boasting incredible views, is now up for sale.
"The $8 million bay-view building is tied to their remarriage—and Kahlo’s famed Dr. Eloesser portrait."
1938 saw the completion of the 11-unit complex at 36–52 Calhoun Terrace. Originally called the Hoeffler Building, it descends the hill's eastern slope in a cascade of balconies, decks, and picture windows that overlook the bay in the style of a Swiss village.
During their brief but intense stay in San Francisco in 1940, Kahlo and Rivera stayed in apartment 42. While he was working across the water on Pan American Unity, the enormous mural he painted for Treasure Island's Golden Gate International Exposition, she arrived in the city in precarious health, struggling with persistent back pain and other issues that needed local medical care. The couple, who had recently divorced in 1939, quietly remarried at San Francisco City Hall in the midst of it all. Self-Portrait Dedicated to Dr. Eloesser, the painting she created as a present for the physician who treated her, was created during the same period.
