The Kahlo Foundation for Mexican Art and Culture has launched the new biennial $50,000 "Kahlo Art Prize", open to early-career Mexican contemporary visual artists, in addition to an international mentorship program and the opportunity to exhibit their works at the newly opened Museo Casa Kahlo.
In keeping with Kahlo's own dedication to fostering young talent, the new award refocuses its mission to assist the upcoming generation of artists. Throughout her career, Kahlo instructed students at Mexico City's Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado, or "La Esmeralda," encouraging them to create artistic voices based on their personal experiences.
The Foundation claims that in addition to honoring emerging talent, the award is meant to give artists the tools they need to advance their careers at an essential point in time.
On July 6, 2027, which is also Kahlo's 120th birthday, the first winner will be announced. Artists will be able to submit their work for consideration in November 2026, and the winner will be chosen through an open-call process.
