Theater play "Frida, un nastro intorno alla bomba" at Ballo di Gorleri, Imperia , Italy on Jun 18

16 June 2026

Written and performed by Francesca Cassottana of the Milan-based theatre company I Franchi, "Frida, un nastro intorno alla bomba  ("Frida, a ribbon tied around the bomb) is an original work. The research draws on various biographical sources that recount the painter’s life story. Of particular significance were readings of "Frida Kahlo’s Lost Diary" by Alexandra Scheiman, "Frida Kahlo: Passionate Letters" edited by Martha Zamora, and "Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo" by Hayden Herrera. Watching the documentary Frida Kahlo, directed by Ali Ray, was also a great source of inspiration. In drafting the script, the aim is to bring out through the play the figure of a woman fighting for her ideals, a strong woman who at the same time embraces her deepest fragility.

Her words offer a lesson for all of us, for our lives, and for learning to celebrate life. It is the first time in the history of art that a woman has expressed, with utter sincerity—raw and, one might say, quietly fierce—those general and specific realities that concern women alone. Her sincerity, at once tender and cruel, led her to provide the most indisputable and reliable testimony to certain facts. Through the events of her life, Frida Kahlo had to become aware of the full existence of her body as a human being. And as a woman, Frida Kahlo laid her body bare and expressed what she felt within it. What she felt was so intense that if she had not attempted to define it, identify it, and then organise it, she might have gone mad, overwhelmed by things and pains she would not have understood, let alone controlled.

The text takes the form of a monologue but is closely intertwined with the music. Indeed, on stage, the music represents La Pelona, Death, with whom Frida confronts, confides in and struggles.
Frida’s music draws on a diverse soundscape: from solo acoustic guitar to the use of electronics in a more intense and rhythmic manner, to more experimental approaches to sound. Everything is managed in real time on stage by the musician, who embodies the role of ‘Death’, with whom Frida engages in dialogue throughout the performance.
