"Diego Rivera e la costruzione dell’arte moderna in Messico nel XX secolo" - (Diego Rivera and the Making of Modern Art in Mexico in the 20th Century) is the largest exhibition of Mexican art in Europe in recent decades, and the first in Italy to focus on Diego Rivera.
Alongside the works of Diego Rivera, the exhibition features masterpieces by extraordinary artists such as Frida Kahlo, José María Velasco, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, María Izquierdo, Tamayo, Lozano, Montenegro, Ruiz, Dr. Atl, Saturnino Herrán and many others. The exhibition is enriched by a selection of videos and evocative photographs, including images of Rivera captured by Tina Modotti.
A group of artists who have successfully woven together tradition, the avant-garde and a diversity of aesthetic languages. The exhibition thus offers a journey through the genealogy of Mexican modernity, placing Rivera at the centre of a visual and conceptual tapestry in which academic training engages with experimentation and a profound focus on contemporary social issues.
Through an extraordinary selection of over 140 works, including 30 by Diego Rivera, the exhibition explores the complexity of a process whose roots lie in the birth of independent Mexico in 1821, when the need arose for a cultural identity capable of representing a new, diverse and constantly evolving country. In this context, art became a key tool for visually shaping the face of Mexico, as well as a vehicle for projects of cultural transformation that blend tradition and modernity and project a plural and constantly evolving image onto the international stage.
The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections:
