Douglas Black, a local artist and inclusive community arts facilitator, spent three months creating together with other local artists the image of Frida, unveiled today in the shop window of Artizan International in Harrogates.
The installation, which is housed at Artizan's Oxford Street location, features mosaics, papier mâché creations, screenprints, and other artwork with the goal of showcasing disabled creative talent and encouraging community inclusion through public art.
The cooperative project gave participants a creative way to develop their fine motor skills, learn specialized tiling techniques, and collaborate as a team.
The artists purposefully chose Frida Kahlo as the subject because she used her art as a means of self-expression and resilience despite having severe physical disabilities and chronic pain from childhood polio and a subsequent serious accident.
Creative lead Jess Thompson said:
"This is one of many incredible projects that our disabled artists have been the centre of. This mosaic proves that disability should never be a barrier to creating something breathtaking."
