In this outstanding one-woman production, playwright and performer Vanessa Severo brings the extraordinary Frida Kahlo to life. As she personifies the various aspects of this multifaceted artist, Severo examines the similarities between their two lives.
It touched an emotional connection with Severo, a Brazilian American writer and performer who was born with a congenital difference in her left hand. She boarded a plane to Mexico City, entered Kahlo's blue house, and began writing the play in which she would eventually play the protagonist. The result of that journey is "Frida, A Self-Portrait." Severo wrote and performed the solo piece, which alternates between two women over time. Nearing the end of her life in 1954, Kahlo spoke with a journalist at home about her paintings, marriages, body, and grief. And Severo, alternating between personas to share her own tale alongside Frida's. Polio in childwood. A terrible bus crash. When Severo was four years old, he chose not to have the surgery. The play is full with references to the Portuguese word saudade.
Frida's evocative art, complex love life, and unique philosophy are depicted through music and movement in a visually powerful work that inspires us all to recognize that we are not alone.
