This summer, Carnaby Street will host a magnificent Frida Kahlo installation. On June 25, ¡Frida Icónica! will be unveiled, turning the famous London neighborhood into a vivid canvas with an amazing and colorful exhibition of public art.
The installation is part of Tate Modern's highly anticipated exhibition, "Frida: The Making of an Icon" - opening on June 25- and is inspired by Kahlo's extraordinary vision and Mexican heritage.
¡Frida Icónica! on Carnaby Street will feature an anamorphic mural and colorful, traditional papel picado created by artist Alejandra Ballesteros. The mural, which is roughly 3.25 m by 2.5 m in size, is made up of four portraits by Frida and modern artists that, when viewed directly, combine to create her famous profile.
Reems of Papel picado, or "pierced paper," an institution of Mexican folk art, will cascade and flutter down Carnaby Street around this striking image, emphasizing themes and motifs that are essential to Frida's life and work.
One of the most significant artists of all time, Frida was a queer, disabled woman of color. Pioneers of the avant-garde have always found a home in Soho because of its rich cultural heritage, diversity, and inventiveness. Given that London will be commemorating Pride, it is a moving venue for a tribute to a person of such stature.
Catherine Riccomini, Director of Marketing and Communications at Shaftesbury Capital, said: “Bringing ¡Frida Icónica! to Carnaby Street is about creating a moment of joy and discovery – a shared cultural experience for London that makes Soho and Carnaby Street unlike anywhere else in London. We are proud to be working with Tate Modern, one of the UK’s most-loved cultural institutions to bring this extraordinary celebration of Frida Kahlo’s life, art and legacy to the city. ¡Frida Icónica! is a tribute to Frida Kahlo’s spirit and the richness of Mexican artistry and heritage, and we hope it inspires everyone who encounters it.”
Catherine Wood, Interim Director of Tate Modern, said: “Tate exists to champion artists, and we passionately believe that everyone should have the right to access art for free. We are thrilled to be collaborating with CarnabyStreet to help bring the remarkable work of Frida Kahlo into the creative heart of London, offering even more people the opportunity to discover her extraordinary journey from a little-known Mexican painter to a world wide cultural phenomenon.”
