25 May 2026
Three leading arts organizations are collaborating to host a number of amazing events and presentations honoring the life, work, and legacy of Frida.
The celebration began with the special Paramount Theater event – Exhibition on Screen —"Frida Kahlo" - the re-release of the award-winning film directed by Ali Ray, at The Paramount Theater on Wednesday, on May 20 (click here for info on the film).
The Paramount Theater is working alongside other two community arts organizations, The Fralin Museum of Art and the Virginia Theatre Festival.
On Thursday, June 18, the community can participate in a hands-on event called "Art Together Paint and Sip" at the Fralin Museum of Art. Art lovers and fans of Kahlo will be able to learn watercolor techniques inspired by the vivid flowers of the renowned artist at the event, which will take place on the outdoor plaza of The Fralin Museum.
The Virginia Theatre Festival's production of Frida will mark the end of this summer celebration with "Frida ...A Self Portrait", at the Ruth Caplin Theatre, July 23–26.
One of the most recognizable and enduring cultural figures in the world is brought to life in the production directed by Joanie Schultz and written and performed by renowned actor and playwright Vanessa Severo. It is a consistently unique and audaciously theatrical experience that explores how we shape ourselves via the art we love while illuminating both the artist and the performer. While creating a poetic performance that examines Frida Kahlo's amazing life and remarkable genius, Severo reveals poignant similarities between herself and Kahlo.
