New release of Exhibition on Screen "Frida Kahlo" film from 2020 in UK cinemas from 19 May.

20 May 2026

The film by director Ali Ray ends with an all-new 10 minute part exploring the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and Tate Modern in London’s 2026 exhibition "Frida: The Making of an Icon".
The film is full with experts who offer lots of information about Kahlo's life, including her marriage, photographs, letters, and personal sources, providing a comprehensive and reasonably familiar account of her life, her creative and personal relationship with Diego Rivera, and how this influenced her artwork.
One contributor claims that Kahlo's 1931 trip to New York, where she kept her Mexican dress, was a political statement in the context of "revolutionary transformation" in art that offered "the art of the people." Through an examination of self-portraits and other painted impressions, the speakers describe how Kahlo's portrayal of herself changed throughout her career as an artist.

The last ten minutes of this re-release, which explores the creation and staging of the new exhibition, are arguably the most significant part of the well-known narrative. According to the Houston curator, "Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon" is "not a retrospective," but it does depict her transformation from a local artist to a "consumer icon." The most captivating section of the movie features Kahlo's artwork alongside that of about 80 other artists who were impacted by it. It also adds to the timeline following her passing, when her work from the 1970s is remembered and revived.
