New immersive musical "Frida: Pintando la Esperanza" by Floriane Valadez in San José, Costa Rica

15 May 2026

The renowned Mexican actress, singer, and playwright has traveled to Costa Rica to provide exclusive information about her ground-breaking production, "Frida: Pintando la Esperanza" ("Frida: Painting Hope.").

A Fresh Perspective: Overcoming the Anguish
Valadez's production takes an innovative approach, whereas many biographical works concentrate on Frida Kahlo's physical suffering and turbulent relationship with Diego Rivera, the musical emphasizes Frida's perseverance, joy, and visionary spirit.
“We want to show the Frida that danced, the Frida that laughed, and the Frida that found hope in every stroke of her brush,” Valadez declared during a recent review.

Art and Technology Together
This show is completely immersive. The protagonist can actually "step inside" her own paintings thanks to the production's use of digital animations and high-definition audiovisuals. The stage transforms into a living gallery where technology and music come together to depict Frida's nuanced emotional world.

The most significant moments in Frida's life are presented featuring an actress who is constantly surrounded by Frida Kahlo’s most iconic paintings and defining moments, brought to life through audiovisuals and original music. This creates an immersive and artistic stage production.
The story unfolds through forward and backward flashbacks (leaps in time), alongside an actress who represents Frida’s conscious and subconscious, taking the audience on a journey through time from Mexico during the Mexican Revolution in 1910, Frida’s travels to the United States of America and her time in Europe, making use of paintings such as: ‘The Broken Column’, ‘My Parents and I’, ‘Self-Portrait with Short Hair’, ‘Without Hope’, ‘Self-Portrait on the Border between Mexico and the United States’,
‘Henry Ford Hospital’, ‘There My Dress Hangs’, amongst many others.
