Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, though not precisely as themselves, are at the center of the opera.
After praying for Kahlo's return on the Day of the Dead, Rivera returns from the underworld to see the land of the living. There, Kahlo meets Rivera, about whom she has mixed feelings; their relationship had been marked in life by his adultery and emotional instability. She can't touch anyone, not even him, according to the one rule. When she is only a spirit, what will happen between them? What does it feel like for one of the greatest body painters to return to the world without body?
Sophie Haigney, an advisory editor of The Paris Review, had a conversation with Nilo Cruz, the librettist and playwright who wrote the lyrics to the score composed by Gabriela Lena Frank ,for their Art of the Libretto series.
For his play "Anna in the Tropics", Nilo Cruz, a Cuban American playwright, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. He has been working with Gabriela Lena Frank on orchestral songs and Spanish-language opera in recent years. Before the first performance in San Diego in 2022, the libretto for "El último sueño de Frida y Diego" had been in development for fifteen years.
In the interview they discuss the formal difficulties of writing an opera about historical figures, the function of visual art in the work, and important issues like what happens to love after death.
