22 March 2026
The exhibition will feature over a dozen pieces by Rivera, five paintings and a drawing by Kahlo, and photograpic portraits of both artists.
The design of this innovative exhibition has been curated by John Bausor, the stage set and co-costume designer of the opera "El Ultimo Sueño de Frida y Diego", premiering on May 14 at the Metropolitan Opera. The opera is mythical reinterpretation of Kahlo and Rivera’s relationship with each other and with their art set during the Day of the Dead.
According to the MoMA, Bausor transfers the opera's design from the stage to a gallery, transporting guests "into the otherworldly setting of the production". Therefore, the exhibition takes an interdisciplinary approach, showcasing the artwork of Kahlo and Rivera in dialogue with the opera. Painted, musical, and decorative expression are skillfully combined to create an immersive and unexpected installation. The exhibition will be accompanied by public programs created in partnership with the Metropolitan Opera to further enhance this relationship.
According to a press release from the MoMA, "Together, the exhibition and programming will shed new light on how Kahlo and Rivera’s groundbreaking art continues to inspire artists across disciplines to this day".
"Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" will be on view at the Museum of Modern Art from March 21 to September 12, 2026.
