Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera will be featured in a new Netflix series

15 March 2026

The series will explore their personal and creative relationship in the political, social and artistic context of the 20th century.
The script, based on Claire Berest's 2019 biography of Kahlo, "Rien n'est noir", is being adapted by lead writer María Renée Prudencio. In its announcement, Netflix said, "The series is the story of a bomb wrapped in silk," alluding to Surrealist leader Andre Breton's description of Kahlo's art as "a ribbon around a bomb." The announcement comes a year after Netflix promised to invest $1 billion in productions in Mexico.

The project will be directed by Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein , with production by Mónica Lozano , through Alebrije Producciones.

"I want to tell her relationship with Diego from a feminine and Mexican perspective, but also with a global lens, exploring their love, their conflicts and their artistic life together in a way that feels modern, intimate and powerful for new generations,” Riggen told Variety. Additionally, Ripstein stated that he wants to go beyond the common talking points of this love story.“The series is a deconstructed, mischievous, and at times wild narrative,” he remarked. “It is built around two fundamental axes: their complex love relationship and their shared artistic life.”
