"Broken Wings" from Houston Ballet on March 12-22, Houston, US

04 March 2026

Inspired by the life and artwork of Frida Kahlo, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's narrative ballet "Broken Wings" was produced in 2015 for the English National Ballet. The ballet features surrealist elements, Mexican folk music, and a score by Peter Salem, all of which are inspired by Kahlo's paintings. Three human characters make up the narrative, with male dancers standing in for Kahlo's self-portraits, which stand for her resilience and groundedness.
The ballet emphasizes Kahlo's unapologetic nature and strong ties to her Mexican heritage while highlighting her ability to turn personal suffering into art. Kahlo's husband and creative collaborator, Diego Rivera, is essential to her life and career. Lopez Ochoa offers a potent depiction of Kahlo's legacy through "Broken Wings", which honors her tenacity and the indigenous influences in her art.

Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
Music: Peter Salem
