Frida in Mexico again after 20 years in the Gelman Collection at the MAM in Mexico City

17 February 2026

"RELATOS MODERNOS. Obras emblematicas de la Coleccion Gelman Santander" includes 68 pieces from the Gelman collection, which was acquired by Jacques and Natasha Gelman in the 20th century and includes 10 pieces by Frida.

The exhibition, including "Self-portrait with Necklace" and "Diego on My Mind, is divided into four thematic sections: Portraits: Constructed Presences; Nature: Between Order and Chaos; The Creation of a Nation; and The Modern: Paradoxes of a New Reality. It combines early works from the collection with more recent additions, all of which are woven together through the languages of painting and film. Visitors are encouraged to view the exhibition as an open narrative in which every piece of art evokes a variety of connections between artistic principles, contexts, and biographies. In this way, Frida Kahlo is positioned by the curatorial approach as a symbolic axis that encourages interaction with the other pieces in the collection.
Some of the greatest pieces showcased at the exhibition are the paintings of Diego Rivera,Rufino Tamayo, Ángel Zárraga and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
