Immersive exhibition dedicated to Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo in Les Baux-de-Provence, France

23 January 2026

Visitors are invited to (re)discover the careers of two historic artists at the Carrières des Lumières starting on February 1, 2026. The flamboyant world of Frida Kahlo will illuminate the room, while Pablo Picasso's artwork will be woven onto the stone walls.

A captivating show is brought to life with 360-degree projections on enormous walls and fascinating soundtracks. Art and technology come together to create a singular sensory experience.

A journey through the rich world of Pablo Picasso, a significant figure in 20th-century art, is provided by the main exhibition. His works come to life on the rock itself in the majestic Carrières des Lumières. Visitors are transported to the center of his iconic eras by the walls' rich blues, delicate pinks, and striking contrasts.

The Frida Kahlo exhibition, which complements the main program, provides a closer-up look at the colorful world of the Mexican artist. She employs a strong color scheme and symbols in her deeply autobiographical artwork. Her paintings come to life on the imposing walls of the Carrières des Lumières, revealing an artistic journey of uncommon intensity. Visitors are invited to experience the expressive power of a profoundly human work through this poignant and sensitive interlude.

The Carrières des Lumières
Digital projections have not always taken place at the Carrières des Lumières. This limestone reserve, which is situated at the base of Les Baux-de-Provence, was transformed into the Grands Fonds quarry in the 19th century due to industrial expansion and a high demand for building materials. However, it declined after the First World War due to the introduction of new materials, and in 1935 it was permanently closed. The location, which is rich in mystery and history, has served as an inspiration to numerous artists, including Jean Cocteau, who filmed Le Testament d'Orphée there after becoming enthralled with its singular beauty. In 2012, it changed its name to "Carrières des Lumières," and today it is the center for digital art.
