Frida Kahlo's face in "Visages d'artistes. De Gustave Courbet à Annette Messager" in Paris, France

16 January 2026

"Visages d'artistes. De Gustave Courbet à Annette Messager" provides a singular voyage through two centuries of artistic expression, where portraits turn into reflections of the creative spirit. The Petit Palais looks at how artists represent, question, and reveal themselves by assembling major works by Gustave Courbet, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, and Annette Messager. Every painting, sculpture, and photograph provides a window into the uncertainties, daring, and revolutions that have characterized art history.

"Visages d'artistes" deviates from conventional exhibitions by emphasizing evocative scenography that blends intimacy and light to produce an almost intimate experience. Visitors are encouraged to find well-known faces as well as lesser-known self-portraits that highlight the artists' strength and vulnerability. A special emphasis is placed on modern artists like Annette Messager, whose pieces highlight the enduring nature of identity issues by interacting with those of 19th-century masters.
