MoMA announced "Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" exhibition on Mar 29–Sep 12, 2026 - New York, US

19 December 2025

"Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" will be presented alongside with the Met’s new production of "El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego" (May 14–June 5, 2026), composed by Gabriela Lena Frank with a libretto by Nilo Cruz.
The opera's set and co-costume designer, Jon Bausor, created an intricate installation for the exhibition that includes pieces by Kahlo and Rivera. Bausor incorporates visual allusions from the lives and works of the artists into his theatrical designs for both the opera and the exhibition.

In a love relationship from 1928 until Kahlo's death in 1954, the two artists—Rivera through monumental murals and Kahlo through personal self-portraits—were major player in a movement to redefine Mexican culture and identity following the revolution of 1910–20. Three years after Kahlo's passing, the fictional story of "El Último  Sueño de Frida y Diego" follows an aging Rivera as he calls the dead Kahlo back to life on the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday honoring departed loved ones. The opera and exhibition design bear witness to the pair's ongoing impact on artists in the performing and visual arts.
