In co-production with Wrocław Opera, the ballet premiered on November 14th.
"Frida" is more than just a biographical ballet when the vibrant and uncompromising life of Frida Kahlo comes to life on stage thanks to the choreography of the renowned Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. It is a beautiful and poetic portrayal of an artist who turned inner turmoil and physical suffering into a daring and radical form of self-expression. The ballet depicts the many dualities that characterized Kahlo, including strength and vulnerability, joy and suffering, tradition and rebellion, and is inspired by her iconic imagery, close relationships, and fierce inner world. As intricate and captivating as Frida herself, Lopez Ochoa's choreography is richly expressive, fusing folkloric movement, contemporary dance, and classical ballet technique to create a multilayered and unpredictable physical language.
With a lyrical and occasionally raw musical style enhanced by the hues of Mexican folk traditions and modern sonic textures, Peter Salem's original score reflects Frida's emotional landscape. The visual poetry of her paintings is evoked in every aspect of the production, resulting in a profound and engrossing theatrical experience. "Frida" is therefore a dance meditation and reflection on resiliency, identity, and the special ability of art to transform suffering into beauty in addition to being a celebration of an exceptional artist.
"Frida" ballet was created by Isabel Ochoa in 2020 together with the Dutch National Ballet. For more info read here.
