12 November 2025
The new theatre project produced by MIC International Company, written by Andrea Ortis and Gianmario Pagano, and directed by Ortis himself will be in Rome from 13th to 23rd of November.
The show follows in the footsteps of musical works dedicated to great figures of culture, after the company's previous productions dedicated to Dante and Van Gogh.
It focuses on the life and works of Frida Kahlo, reconstructed through a narrative that intertwines biography, visual imagery and historical references.
The director Andrea Ortis, who also co-wrote the script with Pagano, plays Diego Rivera. Federica Butera plays Frida Kahlo, while Drusilla Foer embodies La Catrina, a symbolic figure in Mexican popular culture.
The musical project is curated by Vincenzo Incenzo. The choreography is by Marco Bebbu, while the set design is by Gabriele Moreschi. The lighting design is by Valerio Tiberi and Virginio Levrio, the latter also responsible for the video projections.
The ensemble aims to portray a multi-layered Mexico, far removed from traditional folkloric stereotypes. The dramatic structure revolves around three central themes: the relationship between Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the historical and political context of post-revolutionary Mexico, and the presence of La Catrina as a mediating element between the earthly and symbolic dimensions. The narrative is not limited to individual biographies, but includes historically significant figures such as Emiliano Zapata, Lev Trotsky, André Breton, and Tina Modotti. In this way, the work places the artist's biographical story within the broader context of the ideological and cultural ferment of the time.
In his director's notes, Ortis offers an interpretation of Frida Kahlo centred on the artist's ability to “cross the barriers of pain and become its evolution” and emphasises how her paintings are “an expression of ultra-sensitive values” capable of transcending immediate personal experience.
The production is a collaboration with the Frida Kahlo Museum “Casa Azul” and the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, with the patronage of the Mexican Embassy in Italy.
