Two Frida's works on display at the "Making Moves" exhibition in Sacramento, California, US

10 November 2025

The exhibition "Making Moves: A Collection of Feminisms", explores how feminism and the changing complexities of femininity have influenced generations of visual artists.

Making Moves examines concepts of self-representation, care, sentimentality, the erotic, and memory in a thematic manner. In addition to kind loans and gifts from private collections, the artworks on display are from the Crocker's permanent collection.

Additionally, Frida Kahlo's artwork will be on display for the first time at the Crocker. On loan from a private collection, the famous 1947 painting "Self-Portrait with Loose Hair" is a potent representation of feminine strength and self-definition and affirms Kahlo's cultural identity in the years after the Mexican Revolution.

“Frida Kahlo’s painting poignantly addresses identity and feminine experience. Though she lived before the emergence of Feminism as we know it today, in many ways Kahlo's life and work are synonymous with the values of strength, independence, and equality espoused by the movement,” said in a press release Agustín Arteaga, the Crocker’s new Mort and Marcy Friedman director and CEO, . “We are thrilled to bring such a significant work to Sacramento. It is the perfect addition to this exhibition that activates the richness of the Crocker’s collection.”

The exhibition will feature also photographs of Kahlo, including one recently acquired by the well-known Mexican photographer Lola Álvarez Bravo.

From 2 Nov 2025 to 3 May 2026.
