"La Messi-cana", a play by Antonio Grimaldi inspired by Frida at Barbuti Festival, Sep 26 in Salerno

24 September 2025

Salerno is hosting two events during the “Notte dei Barbuti” (Night of the Bearded Men) at Apollonia Hub, in Via San Benedetto in the historic centre, as part of the 40th edition of the Barbuti Festival directed by Brunella Caputo.

On Friday 26 September at 9 p.m., Machina Srl and Teatro Grimaldello present “La messi-cana”, directed by Antonio Grimaldi, a work combining both ritual and contemporary celebration through the figure of Frida Kahlo: 'It is the animal dimension that opens the show, as fierce as only love can be, it is the impact, the crash of a pure soul caged in a human body that smells the other and becomes part of the other. The animal cry calls the Shaman, who in turn awakens Frida, who begins to visualise herself from the outside through the gaze and recognition of the party participants. The party begins and it is life, it is play and joy, it is encounter and mirror, until the arrival of her beloved Diego, who appears only to give her a kiss, then leave her broken inside. This moment marks her true death, not of the body but of the spirit, sanctioned by a procession of characters and the audience. But it is an end that involves a new beginning, it is death that gets colourful, it is a Mexican cemetery swarming with gifts, memories and love: with life'.
