The British Film Institute celebrates Laura Mulvey, director of "Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti" (1983)

15 September 2025

Details of a Laura Mulvey season honoring her BFI Fellowship in November are announced by the BFI Southbank.

The Whitechapel Gallery's exhibition of Kahlo and Modotti's work, which was organized by Mulvey and Wollen, coincided with the documentary's commission. It compares the two artists' lives, creations, and legacies.

It is a recognition of Mulvey's many achievements throughout her remarkable career. She is acknowledged as an important, generous, and influential figure in the global independent film community. In addition to teaching generations of film students, her work has influenced writers, critics, academics, and filmmakers.

Among many others, film portraits of two remarkable women were presented to us by Mulvey and Wollen. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of pilot Amy Johnson's historic solo flight to Australia in 1930, the 1979 film "AMY!" was created. "Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti" (1983) was commissioned to accompany the Whitechapel Gallery's display of Kahlo and Modotti's artwork, which was organized by Mulvey and Wollen. It compares the two artists' lives, creations, and legacies.

Mulvey will announce each of her film screenings. On November 11, she will participate in Q&A sessions for "AMY!"and "Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti".
