"The Fridas", a duet inspired by Frida' s painting ‘The Two Fridas’, on stage in Florence - Italy

02 September 2025

The duet, exploring the theme of human identity through the relationship between two dancers, will be on stage at The Palazzina Reale in Florence next 18 and 19 September.

The Fridas delves into the intricate theme of human identity, exploring a bond of both complicity and contrast between two dancers. Their mirrored yet divergent movements reflect inner conflicts as well as moments of harmony. Physical expressiveness and spatial dynamics—conceived in the Komoco language as a living force that can both connect and divide—emerge as two complementary and essential aspects of the work’s research.

Yet, the relationship on stage goes beyond simple duality. Through gestures charged with intimacy and vulnerability, challenging traditional notions of masculinity, the performers navigate shifting emotional states and embody the countless facets present within every individual. The painting itself “bursts open,” and the duet becomes a reflection of the ambiguity and multiplicity that also shaped Kahlo’s own identity.

Conceived for both traditional theatres and unconventional or museum settings, The Fridas invites observation from multiple perspectives, enriching the exploration of human essence and celebrating its layered nature. The finale, however, offers an ironic embrace of life’s chaos: through parody and humor, the dancers discover a lighthearted resilience—the balm that allows them to keep facing existence’s challenges.
