Lucas Museum of Narrative Arts, opening in 2026 in Los Angeles, includes Frida Kahlo's work

29 July 2025

The project, initially planned for Chicago and first announced more than ten years ago, will include Frida Kahlo "Self-Portrait Dedicated to Dr. Eloesser", 1940 . The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles is finally almost finished after years of waiting and delays.

The building in Exposition Park, which was designed by the Beijing-based firm MAD Architects, looks like a sleek spaceship, a structure that would fit right in with one of Lucas's science fiction movies. The futuristic building is raised above the ground, providing public spaces with shade. More than 1,500 curved fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels and glass encircle its façade, which also features lush greenery.

The museum will have five floors and 300,000 square feet of space inside. It will have theaters, galleries, and event venues. The collection is varied and features narrative art from various media and around the world. Renowned artists like Gordon Parks, Frida Kahlo, and Norman Rockwell will have pieces on display. Additionally, visitors will discover models, storyboards, and props from Lucas's film legacy, including Star Wars artifacts.

MAD Architects describes the museum as a living space that blends architecture, city, and landscape. “The Lucas Museum will be the first institution dedicated to narrative art across cultures and media,” the firm stated. “This project continues to take shape as a landmark that will welcome residents and visitors into a dynamic space where art, landscape, and community meet.”
