The life of the painter Frida Kahlo is a living painting, and bringing the existential and artistic gallery of this great Mexican artist to the stage is the GtvNiù company. As part of the Teatri nei cortili festival, they present the show Frida, una vida libre, featuring live music, from July 18 to 23 at Cortile Montanari - Verona, directed by Andrea Pellizzari.
Pellizzari, who is also the scriptwriter of the work, declared in an interview of 19 May 2025:
"It’s a biography that tells the story of the artist and woman Frida Kahlo, of all her suffering and how it led her to become an artist. It explores a historical period marked by revolutions all over the world — from the fascist revolution in Spain to the Latin American countries where the first socialist revolutions were emerging. It delves into the history of Mexico, President Cárdenas, the politician and revolutionary Trotsky, the Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, and Tina Modotti, the famous photographer of that era, who was a friend and, some say, also a lover of the revolutionary."
"I wanted to give this project an almost metaphysical and otherworldly interpretation. I truly believe that many of the choices were guided by Frida Kahlo herself from above — from the selection of the actress who would play her role to the graphic design of the poster. In fact, by chance, a blood-red background and black graphics appeared to me, and I found it objectively beautiful and very evocative. I really believe Frida inspired me from above!"
And about the search for theatrical costumes he said:
"Frida is always full of color, and I tried to stay true to the traditional Mexican costumes of that time and to her self-portraits. However, there is a subtle change when Frida goes to America and starts wearing more Western-style clothing.
