"Mexico and Clouds" is a passionate and dramatic tale of Mexico narrated through its artists, following the thread built by the marvellous photographs taken in the 1930s and 1960s by Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Caterina Casini evokes memories and fantasies of this marvelous land, recounting the strength it embodies, the freedom of its artists – with Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti in the spotlight – and the creativity that rises to great artistic heights without ever losing its fantastic and popular roots.
Cartier-Bresson once said: “It’s not the mere photograph that interests me. What I want is to capture that minute, part of reality.” Following this approach—and moving through the magical realism of South American writers as well as the rawness of the story Las Muertas by Jorge Ibargüengoitia (which inspires the harshest part of the performance: the story of a prostitute living between Mexico and Texas)—this puzzle is assembled. It becomes both a collective image and a specific story, a particular emotion, aiming to give the audience a profound sense of another land, rich with imagination.
A narration created by Caterina Casini for the exhibition on Cartier-Bresson, Mexican Notebooks, held in Sansepolcro in 2008 at Palazzo Pichi Sforza, following a proposal by Dante Trefoloni.
