11 July 2025
From 12 July to 5 October 2025, the the Antico Oratorio di San Filippo Neri will host the exhibition "Frida - Marilyn. Vite Parallele", curated by Vincenzo Sanfo, with a critical text by Carolina Dema.
A tale in images comparing Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist symbol of independence and surrealism, and Marilyn Monroe, the Hollywood diva emblem of femininity and fragility. A visual dialogue between two figures very different in age, geography and language, but united by an intense existence and a constant search for self.
More than 100 photographs and artworks signed by great masters of photography, including Nickolas Muray, Sam Shaw, Guillermo Kahlo, Imogen Cunningham, Lucienne Bloch and Ed Feingersh, are on show. Public and private images that tell the human and artistic journey of Frida and Marilyn, from childhood to maturity, through complex loves, personal battles and courageous choices.
The exhibition traces the deepest similarities between the two: the desire for motherhood that was never realised, the political commitment, the relationships with famous and unwieldy men - from Diego Rivera to Arthur Miller, from Joe Di Maggio to John F. Kennedy - up to the unexpected bond with Nickolas Muray, photographer and lover of both, whose relationship with Marilyn only emerged after her death.
Alongside the rich photographic apparatus, the exhibition also hosts contemporary artistic tributes: from the famous works Andy Warhol dedicated to Marilyn to those by Mimmo Rotella, Marco Lodola, Zhang Hongmei and Xu De Qi, author of the only recognised replica of the famous painting Las Dos Fridas.
