Frida inspired a sand cast glass sculpture titled "Diego On Her Mind" by Stephanie Trenchard

27 June 2025

Glass sculptors worldwide have adopted the ancient sculpting method known as "sand casting" in the twenty-first century. Melted glass is poured into sand-formed molds to create textured, translucent sculptures that unite traditional manufacturing techniques with contemporary artistic visions.

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Indiana recently purchased the 2024 glass piece "Diego On Her Mind" by local artist Stephanie Trenchard to add to its permanent glass collection.

Trenchard's work focuses on female artists, such as herself, and how their personal histories, relationships, and motherhood impacted their careers. While the main thread seeks to establish women artists as major players in art history rather than as underappreciated footnotes, other narratives are motivated by memories or experiences.
Trenchard's "Diego On Her Mind," which highlights Frida Kahlo through allusions to her artwork and the blue-clad figure in the center, is an outstanding instance. The title alludes to the same-titled painting by Kahlo, in which the artist is shown with Diego Rivera, her lifelong husband and painter, on her forehead.
In the short time between Diego and Frida's divorce and subsequent remarriage, the painting was started. Although turbulent, Kahlo's relationship with Rivera gave her an endless amount of ideas, and she frequently painted or made references to Rivera in her artwork.
Trenchard frequently builds his sculptures on top of one another, resembling a totem pole. One of these sculptures is "Diego On Her Mind." She includes a still life of watermelons at the base of the sculpture, which alludes to Kahlo's last painting, "Viva la Vida," or "Long Live Life," which was completed just eight days before her death in 1954. In her glass work, Trenchard frequently draws inspiration from Kahlo's life to produce stunning art historical exercises set within an illusionary composition.

"Ancient Methods, Modern Visions: Sand Casting from the Collection" is the recent exhibition, held March 15 - May 18, 2025, that featured the piece. An article about the exhibit that was published in March at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art website while the sculpture was on display is the source of this text.
