26 June 2025
Next 27 June, in the occasion of the Campania Teatro Festival 2025, at 21.00, the Mulino Pacifico Theatre will stage "Frida. On my ruins" (first study).
Through the evocation of the figure of the painter Frida Kahlo, the performance proposes to reveal the theme of self-portrait as an act of memory and resistance.
What does it mean to portray oneself in a work? What spectrum is the subject of the self-portrait? Who is painted and by whom? And why?
There is, after all, in self-portraits, the expropriation of a gaze, an exchange of identity that, as in the play, is never one's own. Starting from the iconic movement of transfiguration of pain enacted by the Mexican artist, a series of self-portraits unfolds in front of the mirror of the audience, in which the painter puts herself in the place of the other, of that other who is the protagonist of a particular event, of a story, of a tragedy for which it becomes necessary to attempt a form of redemption. One becomes the listener of a collective memory, bent on intercepting themes that recur in the artist's life, from physical pain to political commitment, from love to gender struggle.
In representing a sign, the trace of an experience, something that calls into question memory and not presence, one thus responds to an invitation, that of a ruin, not intended as consumption, ageing, the bite of time, but as what is at the origin of the work. "Ruin is the self-portrait, the face fixed as a memory of itself, the one that remains or returns like a spectre as soon as a depiction is eclipsed at first glance. (...) How to love anything other than the possibility of ruin? Of the totality of the impossible?" (J.Derrida).
