Frida Kahlo Works Missing at the Casa Azul in Mexico City

12 June 2025

Hilda Trujillo Soto, who served for many years as the director of the Museo Frida Kahlo (Casa Azul) —Kahlo’s former residence in Mexico City, known as the Casa Azul—has made a shocking claim: several artworks by Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) from the museum’s collection are missing. Rather than being preserved as part of Mexico’s cultural heritage and belonging to its people, some of these pieces seem to have been sold at auctions in the United States and are now held in private hands.

After Frida Kahlo’s passing, her husband and fellow artist, Diego Rivera (1886–1957), took steps to ensure that their estates would be given to the people of Mexico. During the last years of his life, he worked on compiling a detailed inventory for what is now known as the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Frida Kahlo Casa Azul Museum Trust, which is currently managed by the Bank of Mexico.

Trujillo Soto states that if any of the works listed in Rivera’s inventory are no longer held at Casa Azul, their sale or removal would have breached both the conditions of the artists’ donation to the nation and Mexican legal regulations.
