“Frida Opera Musical” is a powerful and visionary musical that intertwines art, revolution and passion.
At the center of everything is the life of Frida Kahlo: her tormented love with Diego Rivera, the strength of her wounded body, the resistance and desire to live, the fight for identity and freedom. Accompanying her on her journey is La Catrina, the absolute protagonist of the Mexican imagination and popular culture, an icon of death and life, of satire and eternal beauty; she embodies the spirit of deep Mexico in which colors, music and passion coexist in a single large fresco.
“Frida Opera Musical” tells the extraordinary existence of Frida Kahlo, artist, icon of the feminine, rebellious soul of an era in turmoil, a show that gives life to a profound and vibrant portrait of the painter who was able to transform pain into color and fragility into creative power.
The opera moves between the power of musical theater and the visual strength of the pictorial world. The viewer is immersed in post-revolutionary Mexico, amidst ideological ferment, mural art, European influences and key figures such as Zapata, Trotsky, Breton, Tina Modotti, to name a few. It is a choral journey into the heart of an era marked by the desire for change, in which Frida lives with brazen authenticity.
The relationship between Frida and Diego is the pulsating core of the narrative: a boundless, radical, imperfect love that becomes an alliance and a clash, passion and ideology, a bond that crosses infidelity, successes and personal and collective revolutions.
The setting is the colorful, cheerful and irreverent Mexico of La Catrina, where life and death dance together to the rhythm of art, a Mexico with Aztec roots in which music envelops everything and everyone in a continuous song to life.
“Frida Opera Musical” is a hymn to the freedom of being and the courage of art. It is a declaration of love for life, even when it hurts.
“Frida Opera Musical” will have its national premiere at Avellino's “Carlo Gesualdo” Theatre on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 October 2025.
Realized in collaboration with the Frida Kahlo Museum “Casa Azul” and the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City and with the Patronage of the Mexican Embassy in Italy.
