Frida's Self-Portrait at the LATINOAMERICANO exhibit at the National Museum of Qatar until 19 July

26 May 2025

The exhibition is in collaboration with Modern and Contemporary Art from the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) and Eduardo F. Costantini Collections.

LATINOAMERICANO is the first large-scale exhibition dedicated to Latin American art in Western Asia and North Africa, an unprecedented initiative promoted by Malba (Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires) and Qatar Museums, within the framework of the Qatar-Argentina-Chile Year of Culture 2025. More than 170 interdisciplinary works of art that examine Latin American identity and culture are on display.

The exhibit's section dedicated to Frida Kahlo shows her painting "Self Portrait with Monkey and Parrot". This 1942 oil painting, one of Frida's most well-known self-portraits, features her with two animal companions—a monkey and a parrot—like in many of her other pieces. Also on exhibit is Frida Kahlo's red and yellow huipil, a type of cotton blouse worn by Mexican women. Beside, you'll also find a handkerchief bearing Frida's handwriting and a lipstick stain. Numerous images and portraits from Frida Kahlo's life are also on display.
