On the family's historic property in Coyoacán the new museum honoring Frida Kahlo's life, legacy, and personal family treasures will focus on her early years, tracing her artistic awakening and offering insight into her life and familial relationships.
Casa Roja, a private residence that Kahlo's parents bought and donated to the artist and her sisters, will serve as the home of Museo Casa Kahlo. Her granddaughter, Mara Romeo Kahlo, who is Kahlo's closest living relative and heir, donated the house to the Museum Frida Kahlo, known to many as Casa Azul. Casa Azul, the family home constructed by the artist's father, Guillermo, is next to Casa Roja. As Casa Azul is, Museo Casa Kahlo will become a part of the MuseumFrida Kahlo.
“Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here—on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her. Museo Casa Kahlo will allow us to tell new stories, share family secrets, host new voices, and build a future that honors her spirit” said Mara Romeo Kahlo in a statement.
Never-before-seen personal items will be on display at the museum, including letters, early photos, a piece of embroidery Kahlo made when she was five years old, dolls, jewelry, clothes, and her very first oil painting. According to Hentschel Romeo, Kahlo showed Diego Rivera this painting to see if she had the talent to paint. Additionally, a recently found mural that is thought to be the only Frida Kahlo mural in existence will be on display at the museum.
Museo Casa Kahlo will be administered by newly named Director Adán García Fajardo, who is currently the Academic Director at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City.
Additionally, the Kahlo family conceived and founded Fundación Kahlo, a recently established nonprofit organization with its headquarters in New York City, with the goal of preserving Frida's legacy and advancing Mexican, Indigenous, and Latin American art and culture internationally. In addition to launching a number of public-facing projects that honor Frida's humanitarian ideals and artistic legacy, the Foundation will be instrumental in the creation, opening, and continued management of the museum.
The Kahlo family personally chose Rick Miramontez, a seasoned public relations professional from New York, a prominent cultural figure, and a steadfast supporter of the arts, to serve as the Foundation's chair and to guide this next phase.
