The exhibition will be inaugurated today by Leo Matiz's daughter, Eva Alejandra Matiz, president of the Leo Matiz Foundation, and will take place at Palazzo Greco Stella.
In 1941, Leo Matiz had the unique opportunity to photograph Frida, capturing not only her iconic figure but also her complex spirit. His sensitive and powerful images tell a story beyond mere appearance: they speak of Frida's inner strength, vulnerability and rebellious spirit.
Matiz and Kahlo had a deep relationship, built on a mutual artistic and personal esteem. The Colombian photographer was able to reveal, with his extraordinary ability to work with light and composition, the inner beauty of the Mexican artist, who in turn sincerely appreciated his gaze and talent. Some of the shots taken by Matiz were later coloured by his daughter Eva Alejandra, an art restorer, in accordance with the photographer's own wishes, through a meticulous study that also captured the original colours of the clothes worn by Frida.
Leo Matiz, born in Colombia in 1917, has been recognised as one of the 10 best photographers in the world. After starting his career as a caricaturist and photojournalist, he moved to Mexico, where he became an active part of the cultural scene of the 1940s. In addition to Frida Kahlo, he immortalised figures such as Diego Rivera, Pablo Neruda, Gabriel García Márquez, Pablo Picasso and also Fernando Botero, whose beginnings he documented and with whom he established a relationship of esteem and artistic collaboration.
The photographs of Frida Kahlo taken by Matiz are certified at the Copyright Office in Mexico and Colombia, and are part of a visual heritage that testifies not only to an era but also to an extraordinary artistic and emotional encounter.
Palazzo Greco Stella, keeping faith with its vocation for artistic and cultural promotion, is pleased to present the exhibition -The Magic of Frida: Images of Leo Matiz-(12 May/30 October 2025), with shots whose value is recognised worldwide and which are and have been exhibited in numerous museums of modern art and of international renown.
