The visually stunning "Frida", which was created by Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa in 2020, uses rich imagery from the iconic artist’s bold paintings and deeply personal self-portraits to tell Frida Kahlo's complex life story of triumph and tragedy.
This vibrant work, which seamlessly blends the classical and the modern, magnificently displays Ochoa's creative collaboration as dancers tell a story of turbulent affairs, heartbreaking struggle, and intricate, uncompromising art. The fascinating characters in Frida's fantastical world, including her husband and renowned muralist Diego Rivera, are vibrantly brought to life against Peter Salem's captivating original score, which features lively hints of mariachi, flamenco, and jazz music.
"Frida" honors a visionary pioneer who, in spite of tremendous challenges, painted her vision of the world and left a lasting artistic and social legacy in a hauntingly beautiful way.
For the Hong Kong Asia premiere Ochoa refined the plot by eliminating Kahlo's relatives who were present in earlier versions and retaining only her teenage boyfriend Alejandro Gómez Arias, her husband Diego Rivera, and her sister Cristina Kahlo—the individuals who had the biggest influence on her brief life.
