The photo exhibition "Frida Kahlo – Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray“ from tomorrow in Rome, Italy

14 March 2025

The show will  display at the Museo Storico della Fanteria in Rome - from 15 March to 20 July - black-and-white and colour photographs from the archive of Nickolas Muray, Hungarian photographer and Frida's great love.

Fifty photographs, shot between 1937 and 1946, portray the complexity of her existence: her tormented love with Diego Rivera, her moments of loneliness, the strength with which she faced suffering.

Numerous self-portraits immortalise the construction of her image, making her a timeless icon.

‘We have tried to tell the story of the person behind the artist and the art behind the person,’ explains the curator Vittoria Mainoldi, ‘trying to reconstruct in a traditional way who Frida Kahlo was. Frida was an exceptional woman and an exceptional artist who made her image into a message. Precisely for this reason, we wanted to tell her story through the photographic image'.

Alongside the photographs, eight traditional Mexican dresses with accessories and six sets of handmade jewellery convey the expressive power of her style, in which every detail became a manifesto of identity and resistance.

Documents and letters offer a deeper insight into his inner world, while a video room collects previously unseen footage testifying to the ten-year-long bond with Muray.

An entire section is dedicated to the faithful reconstruction of his studio room in Coyoacán, the place where his art came to life. And as a demonstration of his global influence, a collection of stamps issued by various countries since 2001 celebrates his legacy.
