The show ‘Temperos de Frida’ returns to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, from 12 March

11 March 2025

After its success in Rio de Janeiro and several other cities, the show ‘Temperos de Frida’ returns to Rio de Janeiro from 12 March at the Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim - Sala Rogério Cardoso, always at 7.30pm, with performances on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 27 March.

The play was last shown at the Amazon Theatre Festival, where it delighted audiences and curators with its vibrant aesthetic and engaging narrative. The show recaptures the strength and sensitivity of the iconic Frida Kahlo, bringing to the stage a unique encounter with Catrina, Dona Morte, in a dramaturgy marked by colour, music and emotional intensity.
There is a strong connection between Frida Kahlo and Laura Alvim, both women ahead of their time, courageous and visionary. Laura Alvim herself, as mentioned by Fernanda Montenegro in a talk given at the space in 2022, opened her home to artists and marginalised individuals, consolidating an environment of art and resistance - values that dialogue deeply with Frida Kahlo's essence.

With performances in various cultural spaces in Rio de Janeiro, the show reaffirms the strength of Frida and Catrina, who seem to insist on remaining in the city. According to critic Gilberto Bartholo, "Temperos de Frida" is one of those shows that will remain engraved in the mind and heart and will never be forgotten, due to all its elements, which leads to a magnificent staging.’

SYNOPSIS

It's the night of the Day of the Dead in both Brazil and Mexico. In Mexican culture, death is celebrated with joy and colour, as an essential part of the cycle of life.

The ‘Viva la Vida’ bar opens its doors to welcome those who wish to celebrate. The hostess welcomes her friends: a singer and a guitarist. At the centre of the scene, played by actress Rosana Reátegui, is Frida Kahlo, alongside Catrina, Lady Death, who visited her so many times throughout her life.

In a playful and provocative way, the play questions: if we are all godchildren of death, how do we respond to our godmother's call? The dramaturgy is stitched together by key moments in Frida Kahlo's life, emblematic phrases and traditional Mexican songs such as ‘La Llorona’, ‘La Bruja’ and ‘Cucurrucucú Paloma’, performed live by Natalia Sarante, accompanied by Luciano Camara's guitar.

In ‘Temperos de Frida’, flavours, song and words come together in an intense sensory and emotional experience, transporting the audience to a universe where art and life intertwine in a magical way.
