Frida Kahlo among Black and Latina Women in the Arts celebrated by Ballet 5:8 in Chicago, US

21 February 2025

With great pride, Ballet 5:8 presents Struggle and Resilience: Celebrating Black and Latina Women in the Arts, a ground-breaking evening of music, dance, and spoken word. Performing at the Kehrein Center for the Arts, this show celebrates the talent, challenges, and achievements of women who are still underrepresented in classical ballet, especially in Chicago.

“We are not here to be displayed once a year in a program,” says Julianna Rubio Slager, Artistic Director of Ballet 5:8. “We are a vital part of this city’s artistic ecosystem, and we’re here to stay. Black and Latina women have incredible stories to tell, and our presence strengthens and enriches the arts community in Chicago.”

The show will feature:
Silvita Diaz Brown's Frida Kahlo Solo, which, drawing inspiration from Frida's life and work, embodies the relationship between suffering, resiliency, and creativity that characterized Kahlo's legacy;  Julianna Rubio Slager and Kady Debelak's multidisciplinary masterpiece, The Caged Bird Sings, which is based on Maya Angelou's famous poem; What's a Woman Worth, a spoken word and movement collaboration based on Quina Aragon's poetry; Transcendence, a contemplative ballet by Tobin James about overcoming adversity; and a daring new piece by Rachel Hutsell, a former NYCB dancer, celebrating modern womanhood.
