The Italian writer Dacia Maraini uses "The Wounded Deer" as metaphor of the women condition

10 December 2024

In her latest book "Diario degli anni difficili" (Diary of Difficult Years) the deer painted by Frida with the face of a woman pierced by arrows becomes a symbol of female pain and resilience.

With her new book Dacia Maraini offers an intense and thoughtful work that courageously approaches the themes of gender violence, inequality and the condition of women in the contemporary world.

Dacia Maraini, an iconic author and outstanding intellectual, traces the darkest moments of our time with her limpid and incisive prose, interweaving social analysis, cultural reflections and personal memories. The writer dwells on the idea that, despite the great conquests achieved by women, patriarchy continues to operate as an underground and pervasive force, capable of fuelling oppression, violence and resistance to change.

‘There is a poignant painting by Frida Kahlo showing a deer with a woman's face, running through a forest. The body is pierced by arrows, like a wounded but not subdued Saint Sebastian, while a stormy sea can be glimpsed in the background.‘ That painting for Dacia Maraini ideally represents the reality of abuse, of feminicides and more generally the condition of inferiority to which women have been condemned for too long.

It is not, however, simply an inventory of sorrows and defeats: Diary of Difficult Years is also a manifesto of hope, a call to collective action for a more just and equitable world. Through her account of the condition of women, Maraini reflects on how much culture, language and social habits have contributed to shaping a reality of subordination for women, a reality that, despite progress, continues to generate inequality and suffering.

Maraini does not limit herself to describing the problems, but calls upon each of us, inviting us to reflect on the role that each of us can play in building a more aware and inclusive society. Diary of Difficult Years is therefore proposed as a work of denunciation, but also as a tool to fuel cultural and social debate, offering precious insights into the complexity of the power and gender dynamics that traverse our time.

One of the narrative keys that emerge from the work is Maraini's ability to interweave universal reflections with powerful and personal images. In this sense, the author finds in Frida Kahlo's famous painting, The Wounded Deer, a poignant metaphor for the female condition: a deer with a woman's face, pierced by arrows, who despite her suffering continues to run towards a distant goal. This figure becomes a symbol of female pain and resilience, embodying both the physical and psychological wounds inflicted by patriarchy and the ability to resist and fight back.
